Cameron Corner

Day 27
Making our way back south down the Strzelecki Track, today we headed for Cameron Corner.  On the map this appeared straight forward but when we turned off onto Riecks Road, things became a little more interesting.
Riecks Road
Now we were driving across the dunes and not along them.  Up down up done.  There were few vehicles using this road but we passed a dozen or so motorbikes and a group of Land Drover enthusiasts.  The number of motorcycles was explained to us later.

We crossed more dunes and even weathered a sand storm.

All was going well until we got a blast on the uhf.  Mike needs to pull over to check a tyre on the van.  A thorough investigation revealed there was a problem with his LHS tyre.  Part of it was missing.

After a quick tyre change in beating winds and squalls of sand, we battled on through the dunes..

Finally crossing the border to reach today’s destination, Cameron Corner Store.

It was blowing up a storm and tip to fall below 6 degrees overnight.  Mike and Jan decided to brave it in there van (with hot and cold water and an electric heater. Sally and Colin, without words but a simple nod to each other, said “bollocks to this, we’re getting a cabin”.

Again, the evening was turned over to the pub.  We found out there, talking to some bikers in the bar, that the reason there were so many motorcycles on Riecks Road was because the Finke River race was on this weekend and lots of Victorians were heading to Alice via Cameron Corner.
The Corner Store Pub
The menu here looked fine with steaks, schnitzels, corned beef and more.  Mike fancied the T bone and the corned beef so instead of schnitzel, Jan braved her way through a corned beef dish Mike had ordered in error.  Kurumba Hotel moment all over again.

Before leaving the following morning, we stopped for the obligatory photos of the Cameron Corner marker.
